Weblog 101
January 13, 2008~ 5:45am
Well, wouldja look at that! "Weblog 101"......sounds like a class, doesn't it? Man, I've been at this a long time now. Sheesh. My image host is being cranky-- goes up and down like the damn stock market so this week's entry has been delayed. (Can't complain though. Free sites are reasons for gratitude in this world of the almighty buck and beggers cannot whine, so I'll just shut up about that.)
I've been reading about Susan Sontag last evening after hearing her son, David Rieff, talk about his relationship to his famous mother, as well as the heartbreak of watching her ghastly death from cancer in 2004 at the age of 72-- all that mixed-in with Ms. Sontag's intimate relationship with the photographer Annie Leibowitz, which has finally been defined as a physical one. Oddly, that lead me to all sorts of musings about women and fame- strong women- and how they are depicted in photography and art. This may sound weird to you, but I believe green may be the color that suits a strong vision of women. Take a look at these renderings or females in shown in bright limes and chartreuses, olives and sage....
You've seen Patti Smith in her famous black and white photo, but have you ever seen how ELECTRIC she becomes in green? I call her "Green Oracle"...

It somehow both softens and strengthens her.
Ladies depicted in deep reds may come across as sexual...dangerous... or predatory, but green is something to be reckoned with...no nonsense. A world of its own.

There is an inate intelligence in the look of green, or a bit of standoffish dignity. I was recently struck by this when charmed by the book cover of 'Wicked' as I was reading it, and that concept has stayed with me since. (Not to mention the formidable character of Elphaba with her the greenish-toned skin and her independence of thought and behavior)- so I've grown to love it.

I didn't know anything that could make silent film star Louise Brooks any more fetching than she was, but yes-- somehow green does it. There's mystery in green. Blue has an etheral calm- and sometimes a sadness- just as red is excitement, and pink, an easy intimacy and innocence....but oh man...GREEN?.....green will knock your socks off if you let it. LOL!!!
I do believe that's true.

This one goes out to my honey, who has a soft spot in his heart for the look of a little girl in glasses.
This is rare image of a long ago young miss, captured wearing her spectacles. I have to admit there is a compelling sweetness to the overall face, a vulnerability that says to the world, "Yes, I have this to deal with.....but it's o.k." What a cutie. And look at that chair! They don't make 'em like that anymore.....girls OR chairs. Look at how she's crossed her wee prim ankles- and folded her pale hands. Quite the little lady. Fills me with warmth for those people....those times.

On a more somber note, I'm sure you've seen those wonderfully creative graphic faces made up entirely of small pictures. Here's one I found on the web over the weekend. Made me so sad I wanted to cry....

yes, those are 1,290 casualites of the war in Iraq. All somebody's son or daughter- husbands and wives. Gone. All gone.
And that's only about ONE THIRD the total number. Jesus wept. I gave this URL back on my old poetry board when my own son was over there fighting. I think it's important to keep this information alive and NOTICED. So here it is again.
January 15, 2008~ 6:30am
Midway through January already. Outside, there is the barest hint of snow. Some fluffy down drifted through during the night, but the roads are fine and the temperatures not brutal, as they were in many Januarys past. Much to be grateful for.....like this

the wonder of hands. Especially old hands, veined and carrying their stories in them. They fill me with humility and awe-- always have. If you ask people, "What is your favorite human body part?"- you'll get a lot of answers- many of them sarcastic or smutty- but I think most would say 'eyes'. For me it's hands. They represent humanity to me. Hands are what we use to create, to show we love one another, to deliver blows, to clean our homes, to lift a child-- to lift a heart with simple touch.
I love hands.
