Time is drawing nigh.....HOORAY for the right to vote! I don't know about you, but I'm so weary of the "RAH RAH AMERICAH" mode of governing and being citizens that has permeated our culture

and with it, all the greed and BOOM TOWN philosophy that's gone with it- and through which we find ourselves in the pickle we are in today, with most having believed in it.
Spend, spend, spend, fight the terrorist threat, pour money into the war machine and keep hold of as much oil as possible.... and if you do those things, well... you might just be the sexy, world-dominating, intimidating, George Bush-style 'AMURican' you see depicted above....
...it's been a bill of goods, people. It's made plenty of the top 2 percent filthy rich, and it's bankrupted our economic system and our spirit. For those who who don't think at all, whose closed-minded prejudices, angers and fears fill everything they do...well, hell.....'things are fine, and should just stay the way they damn well are'. (In the words of Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.- "The mind of a bigot is like the pupil of the eye. The more light you shine on it, the more it will contract.") Amen to that, so just don't try, for heaven's sake, it's a waste of time.

That segment of the population will never change- and to try and enlighten them is to try and get blood from a turnip.
No, it's the millions and millions out there who have been disturbed by the way things have slid these last eight years, and who are willing to cast their vote on the side of reclaiming what we've lost little by little. Those are the folks who need to make a difference on November 4th....the people who are not satisfied with the two pictures above and what they say about us. Those folks who remember that this

is what America is about. All creeds, all races...folks from everywhere, from the full spectrum of humanity, banding together for one another and not just acquiring for self and going to sleep at night worrying that it'll be taken away. This tiny segment by itself is NOT America all by itself, people.....

it's just a piece of it... a part of the whole. Let's take care of it again. Let's take care of one another.
As to the hot topic of taxes, and again in the absolutely sane words of Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. - "I like to pay taxes. With them, I buy civilization." Honestly, where do people think the funds come from when we build roads, augment education, care for our sick? It's only common sense to expect that those who HAVE MORE, should PAY MORE........what is the problem with that logic? (There isn't any, except when avarice and greed are introduced into the equation, as we all know. There isn't an augument for not doing exactly that, except that the wealthy don't want to.) You know what you tell a spoiled child? "Too bad. You're gonna." And why? Because justice is stronger than lies-
that's why.
Vote for Barack Obama.

I've been holed up most of this weekend (except for this afternoon for my weekly shopping/eating-out date with my mother) due to the sudden conviction on Friday afternoon at work, that I was coming down with a SEVERE cold.
Since I'm much better now, and the symptoms of my head feeling like it was twice its size and stuffed with mucous that wasn't going anywhere, frequent sneezing, a ghastly tiredness, and eyes that just wanted to close, are gone now, I do believe it was an allergic reaction to raking 6 bags of pine needles up from the yard that were probably full of molds and allegens I'm sensitive to. (That's my guess, anyway.) But staying in, I was able to get extra rest, putter on the computer and take to my bed with a good book....

and this wonderful illustration by Norman Rockwell entitled "Crackers In Bed" describes this cozy feeling perfectly. Substitute a middle-aged woman for that young boy-- and the crackers for 'Little Debbie Pumpkin Cookies'--and it's me alright, soaking up the privacy and the silence, and the comfort of 'checking out' for awhile and resting. It's Sunday night and that island of leisure is almost over, but it did me good: I feel much better this evening. If you're feeling punk, and certain you're succumbing to change of season allergies or a fall cold, do yourself a favor and get the rest you need at the beginning of the bout if at all possible. It works wonders.

OOOoooooooooooo......'tis the season to be scary. This lovely, lovely little card below was sent to me by my best friend in the world- Annette- who lives in Los Angelos. We both loved "The Haunting".....and all things Hitchcock....and Dracula...... and HALLOWEEEEEN!

Ain't it a cutie! Part 'Edward Gorey', part 'Madeline', trotting about a spooky street, sassy and self-possessed as ever. LOL!!!
THANK YOU, ANNETTE! I was a 'slug' this weekend, and didn't buy Halloween cards- (not even for the grandkids!)- so this is a big public thank you- and a hug of gratitude for staying in touch by reading this blog. That just tickles me.
Annette is a commercial artist....she's been a therapeutic masseuse- knowledgeable about homeopathic remedies- a serious film afficiando and occasional dolphin-whisperer- she can swim like a fish- is a nut about physical fitness, and is very well-organized. In other words-- just the opposite of me.......lol......except for those places where we overlap and delight one another. (She was, for instance, at the Obama headquarters in Santa Monica while writing out my card-- fighting the good fight.) I'm a talker. She's a doer- always going off in new directions.
But we have our childhood memories, and folks who've shared one's childhood are absolutely irreplaceable-- they're the folks who knew you when.
I thought I'd share just one teeny bit of the kind of extra special touches Annette gives to everything. Here's the stamp from the envelope.....

Bette Davis! (Only 'Netto' would know how that would please me!) We have 'bits' we did all the time, and Bette Davis impersonations was part of our repertoire. LOL!!-- as well as William F. Buckley (and various and sundry teachers and friends.) (And no, they didn't know.)
So HAPPY HALLOWEEN, Netto! I miss you always... but sweetie, "we'll always have Paris" (I know people say that all the time as a gag)- but truly, it's that place deep in the psyche where the past lives-- and gets up, moons the pompous adult self-- and dances under the moon like a wicked little witch, nostalgia playing an eerie pan flute through a singing tree-- that's what you are to me. Magic, girlie......magic. "Kmph! Kmph!" LOL!!
