FINALLY.... we saw Holly, Gary and the grandkids on Friday! The weather (thank goodness) cooperated nicely with our weekend plans, so there was visiting, shopping... even a MOVIE on Saturday night. (Spring can't be far away if the slippery/slide forecasts have given up the ghost on weekends. The past two had us pretty much battened down for the duration.) So yes, SPRING...

with its flowers and its gentleness, is just around the corner. (Isn't that artwork FABULOUS?) Ever since I posted Schenck's painting 'Anguish' in last week's blog, I've been quite taken with paintings of animals.... and yes....lambs. But this artist is a master of surreal animal themes. Each of his images has me studying it closely and seeing WORLDS of meaning in the composition. Look at this one... a buffalo in the snow, birds flittering about... the big beast's head sprouting young tree limbs and buds.

It's called (quite appropriately here)...."Spring". To see more of this artist's work, visit his website at 'Cargo'.

As to our film this week..... after two weeks of waiting for decent travel weather later on a Saturday evening, we got to watch 'PARANORMAL 3' --which has been sitting in its red Netflix envelope atop my dining room table for weeks now.
We've seen all three and I LOVED this one. (Mostly because I find nothing creepier than scary movies with little children in them.)

Two sisters, the younger of which has an 'imaginary friend' named Toby. (Yes, I do think this is a throwback to Amityville Horror's devil-pig the little girl saw repeatedly at her bedroom window, but who cares? It's a creepy concept that originally made its appearance in 'The Exorcist' by way of 'Captain Howdy'- the 'imaginary friend' who befriended poor Regan... before he made her look like a bruised and spoiled pale green tomato, that is.)
'Paranormal 3' had me on the edge of my seat. True, there's not as much VISIBLE gore or SHOWN phenomena, but it's the building tension and the absolute believability of the actors that caught me right from the start. When featuring children in horror films, the VIEWER becomes the child and therefore more vulnerable to what's happening; seeing things through their helpless eyes, events become more frightening.

The darkened rooms, real and imagined creaks and growls and slithers..... all of it made for a satisfying scare-fest. The first two were 'jump-in-the-seat' startling, but I couldn't escape an awareness that these were films marketed to the late 'teen/twenties' crowd-- whereas this third serving has a more universal 'haunting theme' complete with children's quivering fears.
We're twice vulnerable: there's 'something evil loose in a house', yes- just like the first two movies in this series, but in THIS one, we also see it through far younger, far more frightened eyes. If you wanna be spooked......rent it.

It's been a pretty calm week thus far. I've been keeping my nose to the grindstone at work and when home.... I'm simply floating about, zeroing in on one topic or other.... and simply allowing the currents of the Net to toss me this way and that.

I've been a JELLYFISH in these electronic waters, looking up whatever, WHOMever strikes my fancy. I drift aimlessly...... in total relaxation, but little focus. LOL!! That... and reading 'Transfer Of Power'- a Vince Flynn novel, and the second one I've read in his 'Mitch Rapp' series: I'm almost ashamed to say they've completely captivated me with suspense. (I've become a book adrenalin junkie-- my personal politics out the window --chugging down the locomotive-style action.)
That's where I'm going right now.... back into the protected bunker under the White House to see if President Hayes is gonna make it out alright. LOL! Nothing like a good, fast-moving yarn. It's the cheapest vacation in the world.
I was given the whole paperback series from a fella at work and they're pulling me along like a crack-the-whip ride. Off I go......"we're right behind 'ya, Mitch. And the Seals Team 6 are positioned in front." (Oh lord.... what's next? The "Left Behind" series??? PLEASE! Just shoot me now.)
